I’m not sure exactly what motivated me into the keto diet but I am so happy I did. I’m still seriously new at this. I had so many questions when I started, I didn’t really know where to begin. After three months I’ve got the hang of this and I’ll share everything I know and hopefully I can answer some of those questions for you.
My keto journey. I gained a lot of weight before my first neck surgery. After the surgery I lost it all, and more. I looked so good. I felt sooo bad. I lost the weight because I was in so much pain I couldn’t eat, that is not the way to lose it. Effective? Yes. Fun? No! Then a few months after surgery we started increasing and adding medications and I gained and gained and gained. Total poop. This isn’t a pity party, just an I wanted you to know that I understand the challenges of the journey. Life isn’t always fair.
Keto is the easiest diet I’ve ever done. And I’ve done a number. Isn’t that funny. I never thought I’d be the diet hopper gal. Keto is a complete change in how I think though. Food isn’t so much ‘joy’ as it is fuel. Does that make sense? I felt like I was starting to eat my feelings, a lot.
I find don’t think about food like I used to, I don’t dream of naan bread and sushi. I’m not hungry like I used to be, much more blood sugar stable. I also find my joints feel so much better. My fingers don’t ache, my rings are loose. I used to get up in the night and my feet would be so puffy it hurt to walk. I really think wheat may not be my best friend.
So basic guide to keto is ditch the carbs and sugar. This sounds like a lot but I swear it’s not. What if I let you keep wine and alcohol, chocolate and pizza? Sound ok? You don’t NEED anything to start, but it might be a good idea to think about what you’re going to eat. Make a bit of a meal plan so it’s not all a crazy shock to your body. Some things you may find helpful:
Ketone strips ~ I bought these to monitor if I was actually getting into ketosis. (Pee strips. Amazon. 10$)
Fake sugar ~ I like swerve the best, amazon or most grocery stores.
Alternative flours ~ almond flour is my fav, coconut is good and flax meal adds a nuttiness and cuts carbs. But you have to like that nutty flax flavour.
If you’re a sweets person maybe have a few sugar free treats ~ keto mug cakes, sugar free chocolate, the Russel Stovers I love, available at almost every drug store. I found sugar free chocolate chips at a local earthy type shop. You may want to track your food in the beginning to see if you’re getting the right breakdown. I’ve been using the app CarbManager. My fitness pal is also very popular. I put in my weight and goals and it did the math of what my max allowables are.
From this moment on we are concerned with ‘net carbs’. Not all carbs are created equal, from now on we are just going to concern ourselves with net carbs. On the back of the package take the carbs and minus fiber and sugar alcohols, NOT sugar but sugar alcohols. Both will be listed directly below the carbohydrates.
The best thing I can tell you about Keto is you’re in or you’re out. There’s really not an in-between. One of the first things I learned was if you are going to cheat, make it good. But honestly, I don’t want to cheat. I ate crepes a couple days when when we visited France but after a couple I was done. My fingers hurt, I was swollen, plus I can make them keto friendly. After three months I have the meal plan down, I can eat at restaurants, friends houses, at a roadside gas station! I got this! It was a little hard in the beginning. What do I eat, can I have this or that, how much of a pain am I going to be to others? That’s really why I wanted to make some posts for you, to make it super easy and doable for anyone. I just had pizza and a chocolate turtle type treat for lunch. There is nothing sad about that and nothing hard about it. It’s really just a shift in the foods you eat. Next post I’ll talk all about the menu, what to eat, what not to eat. I’ll walk you throuh exactly what I eat, where to get it, how to make it, and super importantly, what you can drink! I would not ask you to give up wine or alcohol. I will proabably ask you to change what alcohol you’re drinking but I won’t ask you to give it up. We can also do meal plans, anything you want, just let me know what you need and I’m on it. There are no sponsors of this post, this is all me wanting to share. I lost 20 plus pounds and when I look in the mirror I don’t feel sad, I don’t think about it every minute of the day. I was becoming so obsessed with my body image it as taking over. I’m still much bigger than I want to be but I have control of it now. I am not sad, I’m not hungry. I don’t count almonds or eat sad boring food, I don’t live off meat alone (gross). I’m happy, I eat meat, dairy, vegetables, cheesecakes, vodka and soda. I’m not worried abou the holidays coming up and not being able to join in. No no no. I cannot tell you how happy I am on this journey. I have a meal board on Pinterest of meals I’ve tried and liked, or want to try, feel free to follow it and make suggestions of things you think I should try.
Have a completely fabulous day and enjoy yourself.
